OTTAWA, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Some 5,600 Ford workers in Canada began voting Saturday on a new three-year deal reached earlier between Unifor, a Canadian autoworkers’ union, and Ford Motor Co.
“Autoworkers, like all workers, are gripped by an affordability crisis and rising costs,” the union’s leadership wrote in a joint message to union members.
Unifor said the new deal “delivers in a very big way” on members’ priorities regarding pensions, wages, and working in the electric-vehicle transition, with top-scale workers poised to see their wages increase more than 19 percent over the life of the agreement.
“This was an extraordinary round of collective bargaining, taking place in an extraordinary time,” Unifor said.
The tentative agreement comes as Ford is making progress in its negotiations with the United Auto Workers, the union representing American workers.
