NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 2 – The Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) has called for an independent investigation into the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich.
Kiprotich was intercepted by armed men along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway on the night of September 1 and abducted before being dumped hours later near Masinga Dam.
BAKE said the incident raised concerns because Kiprotich’s captors reportedly questioned him about the Standard Group’s news-gathering processes and editorial decisions.
The organisation said this was the second reported attempt to seize Kiprotich this year. In June, armed men allegedly attempted to abduct him while he was driving to work.
BAKE said the incidents pointed to growing threats against journalists and content creators, particularly those reporting on sensitive issues.
“We join his family and the Standard Group team, led by CEO Chaacha Mwita, in relief at his safe return. However, this points to a worrying pattern of intimidation,” BAKE said.
The organisation called on the government to order an independent and transparent investigation into the abduction and prosecute those responsible.
It also urged the government to protect media freedom as guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution and ensure the safety of journalists before, during and after elections.
BAKE further called for an end to interference, harassment and intimidation of media professionals and civil society.
The organisation also cited a March 2026 Court of Appeal ruling that struck down Sections 22 and 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act as unconstitutional.
The court found that the provisions on false information were broad and could be used to restrict legitimate journalism and public debate.
BAKE said attacks on journalists undermine the public’s right to access information.
