NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 29 – The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan on Thursday in his final official engagement held talks with the Acting British High Commissioner to Kenya Edward Barnett, in a meeting focused on strengthening police accountability.
The meeting took place at the British High Commission offices as Hassan exits the IPOA role following his appointment to the Court of Appeal.
“The two agreed on measures to support IPOA through rule of law and governance support programmes, aimed at strengthening the watchdog’s work and independence,” IPOA wrote on X.
The discussions also touched on capacity building for IPOA members and staff, with both sides exploring ways the authority could benefit from lessons drawn from civilian police oversight bodies in the United Kingdom.
A possible study visit to England by the IPOA team was also discussed, as part of efforts to improve oversight practices and institutional effectiveness.
According to IPOA, the engagement was meant to ensure continued support for the authority even as leadership changes take place.
Barnett praised IPOA’s work, saying the authority has played a key role in promoting police accountability in Kenya.
He also commended Hassan for his leadership at IPOA and wished him well as he takes up his new role in the judiciary.
Justice Hassan was on Tuesday appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal.
