NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 2 – Tatu City has been appointed the Regional Office and National Contact Point for the World Free Zones Organization (WFZO).
The formal announcement was made at the 9th African Economic Zones Organization Annual Meeting held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.
The event, officiated by President William Ruto, brought together over 400 global experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss the future of African Special Economic Zones (SEZs). It was hosted by the Kenya Special Economic Zones Authority, the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, and key SEZ stakeholders.
“The selection of Tatu City as both the National Contact Point and Regional Office reflects its excellence as a Special Economic Zone. Tatu City has proven its ability to represent Kenya and the region effectively while supporting WFZO’s global vision of fostering economic growth and innovation through free zones,” Samir Hamrouni, CEO of WFZO, said.
In its new role as National Contact Point, Tatu City will represent Kenya within the global free zones network, facilitating cooperation among stakeholders.
As the Regional Office, it will also oversee membership expansion, regional initiatives, and WFZO activities, promoting African SEZs on the global stage.
“As both the National Contact Point and Regional Office, Tatu City will lead efforts to attract impactful investments, promote best practices, and foster regional collaboration, driving sustainable economic growth in Kenya and across Africa,” Solomon Mahinda, Executive Vice President of Tatu City, stated.
Tatu City currently hosts 26,400 residents, workers, and students, with its population expected to grow to 250,000 upon full completion.
The development is home to 88 businesses, including both global investors and local enterprises.
Among the recent investors is Hewatele, which is constructing a Sh2.8 billion medical oxygen plant, funded by the U.S., Canadian, Finnish, and Danish governments, alongside the Soros Economic Development Fund.
