Professor Ken Walibora’s demise on 10th April 2020 left many of us, students and mentee, in utter shock and disbelief. The contention surrounding circumstances of his death at 56 only served compound the shock of his loss. Today marks three years after his passing and we are reminded of the profound impact the Kiswahili scholar had on the world of literature, language and education.
Walibora was not only a gifted author, academic and mentor, but also a and friend to many of us who had the privilege of studying under his guidance. His passion for the Swahili language and its rich cultural heritage was contagious, and he went above and beyond to instill that same passion in his students.
I had the privilege of studying at Riara University, where he was a lecturer. I remember running into him several times along the university corridors and each time, he had a smile on his face and an encouraging word to say. He was a kind-hearted and generous man who went out of his way to help his students.
His contributions to the world of literature were equally significant with his works being celebrated both locally and internationally. His novels; Siku Njema, Ndoto ya Amerika and Kidagaa Kimemwozea are literary masterpieces that have been translated into several languages and his other works continue to inspire generations of readers and writers.
However, as we remember the life and times of Prof. Walibora, we cannot help but be haunted by the circumstances surrounding his death. The thought of him being knocked down by a bus on Landies Road and being left to suffer without adequate medical attention is not only tragic but also deeply disturbing.
As his family and friends continue to call for a thorough investigation into the events that led to his death, we stand in solidarity demanding justice and accountability. Walibora was not only a scholar and author but also a human being whose life was cut short under mysterious circumstances. His death therefore should not be swept under the rug.
In conclusion, we pay tribute to Prof. Ken Walibora, a true icon and trailblazer who left an indelible mark on the world of literature and education. As we continue to mourn his loss, let us also celebrate his life and legacy and honor his memory by upholding the values and principles he stood for. Rest in peace, Prof. Walibora.
