Showmax Originals have garnered an impressive 26 nominations at the recently revealed Kalasha Awards 2024 nominations, marking the highest achievement to date for the African streaming platform.
With a burgeoning library of 12 Originals already released in Kenya, and more slated for 2024 following Showmax’s relaunch in partnership with Comcast, the platform is making significant strides in the local content landscape.
Joining the esteemed list of Showmax Original nominees are 21 titles from Maisha Magic Plus and Maisha Magic Movies, all available for streaming on Showmax. This collective recognition has propelled Showmax to the forefront of this year’s Kalasha Awards with a total of 47 nominations, solidifying its position as the most-nominated platform.
In the television category, Showmax leads with the thrilling series “Igiza,” securing five nominations including Best TV Drama, Best Lead Actor for Blessing Lung’aho, and Best Lead Actress for Serah Ndanu. Set against Nairobi’s fashion backdrop and the notorious ‘wash wash,’ “Igiza” follows twin sisters entangled in a bitter rivalry stemming from past betrayals.
Close behind is “Single Kiasi,” a perennial favorite on Showmax, with four nods including Best TV Drama and Best Lead Actress for Faith Kibathi. The highly anticipated third season of this female-led drama is set to premiere on 5 March, featuring new cast members Nini Wacera and Jimmi Gathu alongside returning stars.

Other notable mentions include the Kibera-set crime drama “Pepeta,” competing for Best TV Drama and Viewer’s Choice Awards, and the record-breaking first season of “The Real Housewives of Nairobi” vying for Best TV Show. Stand-up comedies “Roast House” and “Comedy Riot” are also in the running for Best TV Comedy, with Abel Mutua and Ruth Nyambura contending for Best Performance in a TV Comedy.
In the film category, “A Familiar Christmas,” Kenya’s first-ever Christmas feature directed by Reuben Odanga, shines with nine nominations including Best Feature and Best Lead Actor and Actress for Pascal Tokodi and Maureen Kunga respectively.
Among the Maisha Magic Plus and Maisha Magic Movies nominees available on Showmax are telenovelas “Salem,” “Kina,” and “Sanura,” along with John Allan-Namu’s true crime series “The Last Door.”
