NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 27 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has waived tax interests and penalties worth Sh209 billion for taxpayers.
A total of 227,071 taxpayers have benefited from the waiver as of February 20th, 2024, the taxman announced, after paying a total of Sh14.5 billion in principal taxes.
KRA last year introduced the Tax Amnesty Programme following the passage of the Finance Act, 2023, allowing taxpayers to apply for waiver of penalties and interest accrued for periods up to December 31st, 2022, upon full payment of their respective principal taxes by June 30th, 2024.
”The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is pleased to report that so far as at 20th February 2024, 227,071 Taxpayers have benefited from waiver of penalties and interest amounting to Kshs. 209 billion under the ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme having paid a total of Kshs. 14.5 billion in principal taxes,” read the statement by KRA.
It also called on taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes and those who have not filed their returns to take advantage of the amnesty it has rolled out before the window period closes.
“We also encourage Taxpayers with ongoing tax disputes to expedite resolution of their cases within the Amnesty period by considering out of court settlements through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) framework,” added the taxman.
“This will enable them take advantage of the ongoing Tax Amnesty, noting that the provisions on waiver of penalties and interest and on abandonment of taxes, were repealed by the Finance Act, 2023.”
