NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 3 – Police and prison officers are set to receive a 40 percent pay raise beginning July this year.
Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua said the hike will improve the living standards of uniform personnel in the country.
“What you do is a very important assignment for this country. From July first this year, we will increase your salaries progressively within three years by forty percent,“ said DP.
“When the morale of our officers is boosted, they will take care of you (inmates) even better. We know the challenges our officers are facing—the housing challenges,” he added.
In December 2022, President William Ruto constituted a National Taskforce on Police Reforms to identify and recommend ways to improve the living standards of police officers.
While a freshly recruited police constable earns Sh21,645 monthly, constables and sergeants, who have been in service for a long time, earn Sh40,354 and Sh55,049, respectively.
