Nairobi, Kenya, Nov 21-The owner of a building that collapsed in Ruaka last week killing two people has been arrested Monday morning as she attempted to flee the country.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said its detectives based at the region’s main international gateway, pounced on the suspect, Jennifer Kamau, 59, minutes before she boarded a flight destined for Texas, in the United States of America
“However, following the arrest, the woman was taken ill and rushed to a city hospital by our officers, where she is receiving treatment before being arraigned in court,” the DCI said Monday.
In the unfortunate incident that occurred in Ruaka on Thursday last week, 2 people lost their lives after a six-storey building belonging to the woman collapsed on an adjacent building, while tenants were asleep at around 3 am.
On Monday, another building, a five-storey that had been housing more than 100 tenants in Ruiru Town, Kiambu County collapsed hours after they had been evacuated.
The building collapsed hours after the tenants were evacuated when cracks were seen on its pillars on Sunday afternoon.
Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi, together with firefighters led the rescue operations on Sunday after receiving reports on the danger from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD.
“Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighboring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,” he said.
