NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 – Nine out of ten ride-hailing drivers in Kenya are men, a new report by Bolt and Ipsos shows, highlighting a major gender gap in the sector.
The study indicates that only 3 percent of drivers are women, pointing to low female participation despite the growth of the gig economy.
“At the same time, the gender disparity observed in the sector highlights an opportunity to expand inclusion and participation,” the report noted.
The findings come despite efforts by Bolt to boost female participation, including the introduction of a women-only ride option in 2021 aimed at improving safety.
The service includes features such as SOS emergency buttons linked to private security response teams.
According to the report, specific actions are required to remove obstacles preventing women from entering the ride-hailing industry and the larger platform economy.
