NAIROBI, Kenya, June 23 – Mobile money subscriptions in Kenya increased by two million to 53.4 million in the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, reflecting the continued growth of the country’s digital payments ecosystem.

Latest data from the Communications Authority of Kenya shows mobile money subscriptions rose from 51.4 million recorded in the previous quarter, representing a 3.9 percent growth.

The expansion was supported by increased adoption of digital financial services and a growing network of mobile money agents across the country.

Safaricom remained the dominant player in the sector, accounting for 89.1 percent of total mobile money subscriptions during the period.

The number of registered mobile money agents also increased significantly, rising from 501,399 to 602,470, a 20.2 percent quarterly growth, helping expand access to financial services.

The growth comes as Safaricom continues to invest in its M-Pesa platform. The company recently completed the M-Pesa Fintech 2.0 upgrade, which is expected to support higher transaction volumes and facilitate the rollout of new digital financial products and services.

During the financial year ended March 2026, M-Pesa processed approximately 46.41 billion transactions valued at Sh41.68 trillion, underscoring its central role in Kenya’s economy.

Small-value transactions continued to dominate activity on the platform. According to Safaricom, about 17.1 billion “Kadogo” transactions were processed during the year, accounting for 36.8 percent of total M-Pesa transaction volumes.

The company says the figures highlight the importance of mobile money in supporting everyday financial transactions for households, informal businesses and micro-enterprises across the country.
