KIAMBU, Kenya, Dec 15 — A man from Migori was arraigned before a Kiambu court on Friday on accusations of impersonating a Supreme Court judge and obtaining money as a result.
Oduor Leakey Amolloh, was presented before a Senior Resident’s Magistrate’s Court following a probe by agents from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Amolloh was apprehended on December 8, 2023, in Migori County and subsequently appeared before the court on December 11, under Miscellaneous Criminal Application No E472/2023.
The DCI had requested a three-day period for investigation, leading to Friday’s court appearance.
“Investigations have indicated that the suspect has residences in the counties of Nairobi, Kakamega, and Migori, from where he is suspected to be operating his fraudulent activities,” the agency stated.
The allegations against Amolloh involve the fraudulent use of Justice William Ouko’s identity, a judge of the Supreme Court.
Victims reported instances of money being solicited and received under false pretenses, the court heard.
Justice Ouko discovered the scheme on November 24, when he received information that a mobile number claiming to be his was being used for fraudulent activities.
Three residences
The subsequent police investigation revealed that Amolloh had multiple residences in Nairobi, Kakamega, and Migori, suspected to be bases for his fraudulent operations.
Documents filed in court indicate that letters, falsely attributed to various institutions, were used by the accused to secure employment for unsuspecting victims.
The DCI sought and obtained court orders to search Mr. Amolloh’s residences for relevant exhibits.
The Judiciary urged the public to be vigilant against impersonators affirming that judges do not seek personal favors, and individuals approached by anyone purporting to be a judge should verify such claims with the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary.
In response to the case, the Judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethics, transparency, and the rule of law.
The court ordered Amolloh’s detention in the custody of the DCI for a final three days to conclude investigations.
The Magistrate further ordered DCI to take the accused person to Kisumu, where most of the alleged crimes are said to have been committed.
He will be arraigned at the Kisumu Law Courts on Tuesday, December 19.
