NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 17 — The Kenya Meteorological Department has stated that several regions of the country will continue receiving rain between October 17 a d 23.
In a report on Tuesday, Director of Meteorological Services David Gikungu indicated that isolated storms are likely to occur in some areas including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
In the highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley, morning rains are expected over a few places.
“Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places. Night showers are expected over a few places occasionally spreading to several places,” read the report.
In North-western Kenya (Turkana and Samburu Counties) morning rains are expected with occasional afternoon and night showers as well thunderstorms in several places.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County), Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi will experience morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers over a few places occasionally spreading to several places.
“North-eastern Kenya (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties), morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers are expected over few places occasionally spreading to several places,” read the report.
Additionally, high average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius are expected over several parts of the country including the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
“A few areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time (minimum) temperatures of less than 10oC,” read the report.
In Kisumu maximum (daytime) temperatures will be as high as 33OC with minimum temperatures of up to 170C.
Temperature surges
For Kabarak maximum (daytime) temperatures will rise to 28OC while minimum (night-time) temperatures will drop to 10oC
“Lodwar will experience high maximum (daytime) temperatures of up to 380C and nights will also be warm with minimum temperatures approaching 260C,” read the report.
“Maralal will be cooler with maximum (daytime) temperatures rising to 280C while minimum (night-time) temperatures will go down to 130C.”
Maximum (daytime) temperatures will rise to 32oC in Thika while minimum (night-time temperatures will be as low as 130C.
Nyahururu will be generally cool with maximum (daytime) temperatures not exceeding 26OC minimum (night-time) temperatures dropping to 08OC.
“In Lamu, maximum (daytime) temperatures will be as high as 320C while minimum (night- time) temperatures will drop to 23OC. Maximum (day-time) temperatures will rise to 320C in Mtwapa with minimum (night-time) temperatures of up to 220C,” read the report.
Comparing the 2 to 8 October 2023 and the 9 to 15 October 2023 periods, the agency noted that there was an increase in rainfall amounts over most parts of the country except for the Coast.
The highest seven-day rainfall total (119.9mm) was recorded at Nyaroya Rainfall Station in Migori County, followed by Ukakula farm rainfall station in Bungoma with 103.9mm.
Butere rainfall station in Kakamega followed recording a total of 99.1mm, then Kericho meteorological station in Kericho recording a total of 97.1mm.
The agency also noted daytime (maximum) temperatures increased over much of the country with only a few stations, including Kakamega, Kisumu and Suba recording decreases.
“Night-time (minimum) temperatures increase over most stations though a few like Narok, Nyahururu and Msabaha recorded decreases,” read the report.
