KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 27 – Kisumu national polytechnic students have boycotted classes protesting against hike in fees.
The students converged at the polytechnic gate, where they barricaded it with stones to prevent of movement of vehicles in and outside the institution.
Police arrived at the scene, engaged the students leadership in a dialogue to break the impasse.
At the moment, police officers are engaging the management as students chant outside.
It’s not yet clear by how much the fees has gone up.
The students accuse the principal of closing down school hostels and banning the giving out school bus to ferry students to burials Incase of students death and fee increment.
Now, the Principal Catherine Kalonye says, hostels were closed two years ago.
Circular from ministry banned use of buses to funerals.
For fee she says is a directive from the ministry which was again passed by the institution Council.
Says students were to start Examinations today ….strike is about exam fever.
“I spoke to the students yesterday, all there representatives were present only for students to decline exams today,” she said.
The principal accussed former students for inciting students to go on strike.
“I saw some who had completed their courses, they’re among those chanting outside there,” she said.
