NAIROBI, Kenya, June 19, 2026 – It is a high-stakes, final-day survival mission for the Kenya Men’s Tennis Team at the ongoing Davis Cup Africa Group IV tournament.

Following a grueling and closely contested 2-1 defeat to Ghana, Team Kenya has dropped to third place in Group A standings, with just a single set separating them from a higher placement.

The loss has thrust the country into a must-win relegation play-off against Mozambique, with action scheduled to serve off at 10:00 AM.

Kenya must emerge victorious to secure their status and remain in Group IV for the next season.

The other side of the relegation bracket will see Botswana lock horns with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in a parallel battle for survival.

The tie against Ghana was a roller-coaster of emotions.

Rising star Kael Shah gave Kenya a magnificent fighting chance in his singles rubber, showing immense resilience to outlast Ghana’s Abraham Asaba in a three-set thriller, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

However, the momentum shifted when the experienced Ismael Changawa found the going tough against Samuel Agbesi Osei, falling in a 7-6, 6-1 defeat.

With the tie deadlocked at 1-1, the decisive doubles match saw the Kenyan duo of Kael Shah and Zayyan Virani fight valiantly but ultimately drop the tie in straight sets, losing 6-4, 7-6 to the Ghanaian partnership of Asaba and Osei.

Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Team Kenya captain Rosemary Owino chose to look at the bigger picture, fiercely defending her squad and praising their unwavering spirit on the court.

Owino pointed out that the current squad is undergoing a crucial rebuilding phase, but the level of talent and grit on display proves they belong on this stage.

“The players showed incredible effort and commitment out there Even though we are in a rebuilding phase, this team has proven beyond doubt that they can stand toe-to-toe and compete fiercely with any opponent on the continent,” Owino noted after the match.

As Kenya fights to avoid the drop, the tournament’s heavyweights will be battling for a ticket to the upper tier.

In the promotional play-offs, Algeria will clash with Angola, while Zimbabwe will square off against Ghana.

The winners of these two ties will officially earn their promotion to the Davis Cup Africa Group III.

Zimbabwe enters the promotional round with high morale after their standout duo, Courtney John Lock and Ronan Tashingamtisi, put on a doubles masterclass to defeat Angola’s Daniel Domingos and Emerson Pedro 6-3, 7-6.

Reflecting on their victory, the Zimbabwean pair echoed a sentiment felt across the tournament, noting that the standard of tennis across Africa is rapidly expanding and becoming incredibly competitive.

For Captain Owino and her charges, however, the immediate focus is singular, block out the noise, reset from the Ghana disappointment, and deliver a clinical performance against Mozambique to preserve Kenya’s Davis Cup standing.
