NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 18 – The Ministry of Health has urged Kenyans to exercise caution and avoid flooded roads, waterways to prevent injuries even as the rains intensify.
According to the Ministry, “waterways, flooded areas, rivers and oceans can rapidly swell and become extremely dangerous.”
The warning follows incidents in Mombasa where several homes in parts of Mombasa have been destroyed following flooding in the coastal city triggered by ongoing rains in the region.
At least five houses were destroyed in Chaani area of Changamwe constituency.
No one was injured during the incident, locals told Capital News on Friday.
In Bamburi, Junda and Kiembeni area of the larger Kisauni constutuency, the roads were rendered impassable due to the heavy downpour.
The Kenya National Highways Authority also issued a traffic alert over the submerged road at Kwa Kadzengo area, between Mtwapa and Kilifi after metre deep waters were reported.
In its advisory, the authority stated that the flooding that was occassioned by the ongoing heavy rains across the country, that has rendred the road impassable.
It advised motorists to exercise restraint and caution, as they wait for the water levels to recede before traffic returns to normalcy.
It however assured that the new road which is currently under construction will be 1.5 metres higher than the existing one, with 4 1,200mm twin Culverts to be installed to balance water levels on both sides of the road.
