Tension Mounts in Kathuci Over Alleged Herders’ Invasion

NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 21 – Tension is rising in Kathuci area of Antubetwe Kiongo Ward, Igembe North Constituency, where residents have raised alarm over increased insecurity linked to suspected invading herders.

The presence of the herders has disrupted daily life, with Maraene School forced to close early for the mid-term break due to safety concerns. Residents say the move underscores the seriousness of the situation.

Locals allege that the herders, who arrived about four months ago from nearby parts of Meru County, have been grazing livestock on private farms without permission. The activity has reportedly led to widespread destruction of crops and damage to farm infrastructure, leaving many families counting losses.

Beyond economic concerns, residents fear for their personal safety, particularly that of children. Parents have voiced worries over possible attacks and gender-based violence, calling for urgent intervention.

The community is now urging security agencies and government officials to step in, remove the herders, and restore calm before the situation spirals out of control.
