NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 16 – President William Ruto is set to jet out today for Addis Ababa Ethiopia for the 37th African Union (AU) summit of Heads of State and Government.
According to State House Spokesman Mohamed Hussein, President Ruto will speak on education inequalities that have left 98 million children in Africa without access to schooling.
“In his capacity as the chair of the committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC)the president will also deliver a report on the strides the continent has made in mitigating the climate crisis,” said Hussein in a statement.
He revealed that president Ruto will also participate in a mini East African Community summit on the sidelines anchored on addressing the Congo crisis.
The head of state leaves the country hot on the heels of Azimio leader Raila Odinga announcing his bid to assume as African Union (AU) chairperson.
Odinga made the announcement Thursday, seeking to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat whose term comes to an end in July this year.
“I am prepared to take on this challenge and offer myself for service. I have requested my friend, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, to continue advocating for my candidacy and engage with other leaders,” Odinga stated after a meeting with the former president in Nairobi.
President Ruto is fronting Raila’s candidature, potentially reshaping Kenya’s political landscape, and with the AU summit at hand, the head of state is likely to seize the platform to drum up support for Odinga at the continental front.
