NAIROBI, Kenya, July 25 – Over 3,000 Boda Boda operators operating in Molo have graduated from a training programme sponsored by OYE Platform Solutions.
The initiative is part of the firm’s strategy to reduce road accidents, enhance safety, and induce discipline in the sector.
The riders went through rigorous training on road safety measures and how to avoid preventable accidents in the country.
They also embraced insurance coverage as a way of safeguarding their welfare and that of their passengers.
Speaking during the event, Roads and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government is keen to partner with players in the sector to curb rising cases of road accidents that have claimed the lives of many motorists, pedestrians, and boda boda operators.
“While the government is doing everything to enhance road safety, we can only achieve this through concerted efforts of all players pulling together to cement gains,” the CS said.
OYE Kenya chief executive officer Kevin Mutiso urged boda boda operators to take advantage of benefits offered by the marketplace designed to help them access insurance affordably, keep them on the road and thereby realize more revenues.
“Despite the important role the boda boda sector plays in Kenya’s fast-growing e-commerce industry that employs hundreds of thousands, many boda boda operators are not fully trained and are not insured, resulting in many accidents that leave families broken. This drive is meant to put an end to that,” Mutiso said.
The event brought together multiple stakeholders, including electronic mobility teams led by Kiri EV and Ampersand, to demonstrate to boda boda riders the cost-saving benefits of electric bikes.
OYE distributed over 3,000 helmets to the riders to enhance their safety.
