NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 16 — The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned the public against boarding illegal Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
The agency issued the cautionary statement on Saturday amid an influx in vehicles operating outside the regulatory framework as Kenyans head for festivities upcountry.
The agency’s manager in charge of road safety, Samuel Musumba, noted that high demand had led to the emergence of unlicensed and unroadworthy vehicles posing a threat to public transport.
“We also take note of the influx of unlicensed vehicles also coming in to offer PSV services here and there, coming in of unlicensed and unroadworthy vehicles who are also making their way on the road,” he said.
Musumba said NTSA, working jointly with the National Police Service, will conduct a nationwide operation to ensure that all vehicles are compliant with regulations.
He said the agency will pay particular attention to monitoring speed infringements to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
“We will be monitoring very keenly the operations of every vehicle on that road just to ensure that we have a safe travel,” the NTSA manager said.
“NTSA will be monitoring speeds, we will also be checking on compliance issues. We will be on our way to mount a serious operation to ensure that our travels are safe,” he added.
Musumbu urged members of the public, especially those travelling in PSVs, to report any incident of careless and unsafe driving to the National Police Service for immediate action.
