NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 11 – As Kenya joins the global observance of International Safer Internet Day, Dutch NGO Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH NL) is calling for stronger measures to protect children from online exploitation.
Kenya Programme Manager Dennis Ratemo warned that an unregulated online environment exposes children to dangerous content and sexual exploitation.
“Online, there is all sorts of content – some of which is not suitable for children. Without proper regulation, kids can access material that may be detrimental to their growth,” Ratemo stated.
He noted a worrying trend of child exploitation moving from offline spaces to the internet, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced digital safeguards.
Ratemo urged parents and guardians to be the first line of defense in ensuring their children’s online safety.
“The internet is a vital resource for learning, connecting, and exploring, but it also poses significant risks, such as online child sexual exploitation,” he added.
In 2023, TdH NL, in partnership with Childline Kenya and in collaboration with the Directorate of Children Services, launched a three-year program dubbed “Safety for Children and their Rights Online” (SCROL).
The initiative aims to protect children—regardless of gender, class, religion, ethnicity, or ability—from online sexual exploitation within safe family and community environments.
This year’s International Safer Internet Day, themed “Together for a Safe Internet,” focuses on raising awareness of online safety, ensuring that children’s digital experiences are secure and supportive of their development.
