NAIROBI, Kenya, December 6 – The East and Central Africa Handball champions Nairobi Water drew 37-37 with Ugandan side Nkajja in an energy-sapping encounter at the ongoing East and Central Africa Handball Championships at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The water queens were inspired by Gladys Chilo who top scored for them with 10 points as Jane Waithera added nine more.
Melvin Akinyi scored seven points whereas Michelle Adhiambo and Merina Andala each added three more.
Conversely, Aber Priscilla was the Ugandans’ brightest spark, contributing eight points to the scoreboard with Shakira Bako and Lilian Achora each scoring seven.
The draw gives the Kenyans an unblemished record in Pool A in the week-long championships, following their 25-21 win over Kenya Defence Force (KDF) in their opening fixture at the same venue on Sunday.
In the other tie of the day, KDF’s men team went down 37-32 to Rwanda’s Gicumbi in their Pool A match.
Kevin Immo led the scoring charts for the soldiers with five points as Isaac Kololi, Frank Kiplagat and Abel Weru added four more each.
For the Rwandese, their star player was Fiacre Munezero who scored eight, with Pool Muhawenayo scoring seven more to set their side on the path to victory.
KDF had began their campaign on a positive wavelength, humbling their fellow soldiers from Uganda Patriotic Defense Forces (UPDF), 45-43 on Monday.
In Pool B, General Service Unit (GSU) maintained their grip on the log lead with a 36-21 demolition of Evergreen of Uganda.
Christopher Mayende was the man of the match, clocking 11 points on the scoreboard for the paramilitary side.
Shakib Nyanzi and Anthony Lamu were the star men for the losers, each scoring four points to come to their team’s aid.
