NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 16 – Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya who is facing assault charges over the slapping of a ward representative on Tuesday failed to appear before the Kakamega law courts after being taken ill.
Photos circulated online showed the legislator bedridden in a yet to be established health facility.
Salasya who allegedly slapped, Malaha/Isongo Member of County Assembly Peter Walunya Indimuli over the weekend during a funeral had been freed on a Sh 50,000 cash bail.
Following the incident, Salasya’s two bodyguards were arrested and disarmed after shooting in the air during the drama at a funeral.
The lawmaker is also facing an offence of creating a disturbance.
Drama ensued when the victim invited Salasya to the podium and requested him to observe the family decorum in his speech.
The ward representative told police the Mumias East MP arrogantly shouted him down which immediately erupted unrest amongst the mourners.
In the viral video, few minutes the first-time lawmaker took the podium he is seen asking the MCA to sit down and within second he moved to attack the ward representative.
Police officers from Shianda police station intervened and restored calmness in the funeral.
The lawmaker has been on the spotlight over various incidences and last year where he was arrested a number of times.
On November 28, detectives in Kakamega launched probe into the allegations that Salasya had threatened to kill a magistrate who ruled against him in Sh500,000 debt suit.
The legal dispute arose when a local businessman sued the first time Member of Parliament for failure to repay a loan issued on December 13, 2022.
Following the ruling, police say that Salasya confronted Kiama outside the Kakamega Law Courts and threatened to kill her before fleeing.
The magistrate reported the incident which allegedly happened at the Kakamega Police station.
“He confronted her outside the court room and threatened to kill her and then took off,” read a report obtained by Capital FM news.
