NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 13 – Thousands of Kenyans thronged Kasarani stadium on Tuesday to witness the swearing-in of President-Elect William Ruto.
Gates at the venue were opened as early as 4.00 am with Kenyans streaming into the venue to witness the historic fete.
As at 5.00 am, the 60, 000 capacity stadium was already full to the brim.
“I have travelled all the way from Eldoret to witness this historic event,” Elijah Kibet who was already seated by 5.00 am told Capital News.
Kibet’s sentiments were similar with those of Joseph Kamau who travelled from Nyeri to witness the event.
“I could not afford to miss this day. This is history,” Kamau said.
For others like Vincent Munyua who is attending such an event for the first he is grateful to be alive to witness the “historic day.”
“I voted for the first time, and nothing makes me happier than seeing my President take the oath of office as our fifth,” Munyua said.
The noise at the stadium was ecstatic with Kenyans seated erupting into jubilation each time the name of President-Elect was mentioned.
Outside the venue, thousands of Kenyans were following the proceedings at designated stations where huge screens were mounted.
“I wanted to be part of history. I would have followed the event at home, but I decided to be part of history,” Lucy Wanjiru who missed a spot inside the venue and travelled all the way from Thika said.

On Monday, the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated President-Elect Ruto and wished him well.
“On behalf of my family, I want to wish the President-Elect success,” he said.
President Kenyatta who has had a frosty relationship with his deputy of 10 years confirmed that he will present to handover the instruments of power to honor the longstanding tradition.
Twenty Heads of State and 2, 500 Very Important Persons (VIPs) are among guests who will grace the event.
The function is set to kick off at 10.30 am.
