Reggae sensation Christopher Martin was the center of celebration at The Official People’s Ball, held on Saturday, August 9 in Queens, New York.
Hosted by the Jamaica Independence Foundation, Inc. (JIFINYC), the event marked Jamaica’s 63rd Independence with a night of music, honors, and cultural pride.
In a standout moment, New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a formal citation naming August 9 “Christopher Martin Day” across the city, a significant tribute to the artist’s influence on reggae and Caribbean music.
Martin was presented with the Ambassador and Innovator of Reggae Music Award, a prestigious honor that came alongside official proclamations from both the U.S. House of Representatives and the New York State Senate.
Sharing the stage with him were StacyMac, a popular media personality and event co-host; J. Lexy Brooks, President of JIFINYC; and VP Records executives Chris Chin and Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin.
The night was filled with celebration as Martin performed several fan-favorite hits, fresh off a major appearance at Jamaica’s Grand Gala on August 6 at Kingston’s National Stadium, an event that also recognized legends Beres Hammond, Capleton, and Leroy Sibbles.
It’s not uncommon for cities to honor influential figures by declaring a day in their name, celebrating their contributions to culture, activism, or the arts. For example, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o was honored with “Lupita Nyong’o Day” on October 20, in Harlem, New York City, coinciding with her Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed play Eclipsed. Similarly, Megan Thee Stallion Day was declared in Houston on May 2 for her philanthropic work during the pandemic and the Texas winter storm. In Minnesota, both “Beyoncé Day” (May 23) and “Beyoncé and Jay-Z Day” (August 8) were proclaimed in recognition of the artists’ cultural influence. New York City designated “David Bowie Day” on January 20, 2016, commemorating the final performance of his musical Lazarus. And in Los Angeles, “Born This Way Day” was celebrated on May 23, 2021, in honor of Lady Gaga and the 10th anniversary of her landmark album.
