KISUMU, Kenya, Jan 30 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer attached to Mamboleo Police Post in Kisumu for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe of Sh15,000 from a member of the public.
The suspect, Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor, was arrested on Wednesday, following investigations into a complaint that he demanded a bribe to prevent the prosecution of a suspect held in police custody.
According to the EACC, the case arose after police officers from Mamboleo Police Post, accompanied by the area chief, raided the home of John Oluoch on Friday last week, following allegations of bhang possession.
Although no illegal substances were recovered during the operation, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post.
Investigations revealed that when a relative followed up on the arrest, they were referred to Sergeant Kiama, who allegedly demanded Sh15,000 to ensure that Oluoch would not be taken to court. The complainant reported the matter to the EACC, prompting an investigation.
Further findings indicated that officers at the police post allowed Oluoch to solicit bribe money from relatives while he remained in custody between January 23 and January 28, 2026, when he was eventually arraigned in court.
On the day of the arrest, EACC officers conducted a sting operation at the Winam Law Courts, where Sergeant Kiama was apprehended as he received the bribe from the complainant.
The suspect was later booked at the Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and released on bond pending the conclusion of investigations.
The EACC warned public officers against engaging in corrupt practices and reiterated its commitment to combating bribery at public service delivery points to enhance accountability and access to quality services for all citizens.
