NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has opened a regional office in Nakuru County.
The Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department of ICT and the Digital Economy, John Kipchumba Tanui, said that the new branch will serve as a central hub for data protection services in the region.
It will also provide guidance and support to organizations and individuals in matters of data protection regulations.
“With the opening of this regional office, it is hoped that the services offered by the Office of Data Protection Commissioner will be more accessible to more Kenyans and provide guidance on how to register as data handlers and how to seek redress in cases of data breaches,” the PS said.
The new outlet aligns with the ODPC Strategic Plan of 2022–2025, whose purpose is to devolve government services.
Speaking at the launch event, Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait urged Kenyans to visit the office and familiarize themselves with their rights as data subjects.
Kassait acknowledged the need for citizens’ awareness of data privacy, adding that the Nakuru Regional Office will facilitate awareness campaigns at the grassroots level.
“We firmly believe in everyone’s right to control their personal information, and this regional office will ensure that everyone is involved in efforts to enhance trust and transparency in data protection in Kenya.” stated the Data Commissioner.
“Let us collaborate to build a robust data protection ecosystem that fosters trust, Innovation, and responsible data practices,“ she added.
The ODPC has established its presence in Huduma Centres in Nyeri, Garissa, and Eldoret counties, as well as in Kisumu and Mombasa.
The office is working on extending its presence across ten additional regions across the country.
