NAIROBI, Kenya, July 28 – Kenyan technical colleges have developed the capacity to produce vehicle components that meet industry standards, opening the door for partnerships with global automotive manufacturers.
According to John Tuwei, Director of TVET Projects and Partnerships at the Ministry of Education, local Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are now capable of manufacturing spare parts suitable for companies such as Toyota Kenya and others operating in the region.
“These spare parts can be supplied to big vehicle manufacturers,” said Tuwei during the launch of the 10th Africa Tech Challenge (ATC) at the Technical University of Kenya.
He noted that this year’s edition of the challenge showcases not only competition but also the culmination of intensive training focused on technical skills, innovation, and commercialisation readiness.
The government says the move is part of a broader strategy to position Kenya as a regional manufacturing hub, with a focus on leveraging local talent and strengthening industrial supply chains.
