NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 14 – The Policyholders Compensation Fund (PCF) has commenced compensation payments to policyholders and claimants of Trident Insurance Company Limited, offering relief to hundreds of customers affected by the insurer’s collapse.

In a public notice issued Tuesday, the state corporation said the move follows its mandate under the Insurance Act to cushion policyholders when insurers are placed under statutory management or have their licenses revoked.

“Policyholders Compensation Fund has commenced payment of compensation to policyholders and claimants of Trident Insurance Company Limited (under Statutory Management),” read the notice in part.

“Policyholders and claimants with unsettled claims are therefore advised to visit the PCF website to submit their claims through the online portal.”

The Fund has directed affected claimants to submit applications via its online portal starting April 14, 2026, with a two-year window provided for filing claims.

Compensation will be capped at Sh500,000 per claim in line with statutory limits.

PCF, a state corporation under the National Treasury, was established under Section 179 of the Insurance Act (Cap 487) and operationalised in 2004 to enhance confidence in the insurance sector by compensating policyholders of failed insurers.

The payout comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny in Kenya’s insurance industry, led by the Insurance Regulatory Authority, which has intensified reforms to strengthen capital adequacy and protect policyholders.

Industry data shows insurance penetration in Kenya remains low—at about 2 to 3 percent of GDP compared to global averages—highlighting the need to restore public trust.

The collapse of insurers such as Trident has historically dented confidence, often leaving claimants stranded for years.
