Project Black Woman is the brainchild of Nile Dawta, a Kenyan Reggae artist whose mantra is “Women are the custodians of any culture, if you wish to change the world, start with the woman.”
With a successful track record as a musician and gender advocate, Nile Dawta brings extensive experience in using artistic expression for social change. Her prior successes include winning the UN-Human Rights Art Competition and the Brazilian Young Talent Africa Music Awards.
As a pioneering figure in the Neo-Reggae movement in East Africa, Nile Dawta’s expertise lies in blending music with advocacy to address social issues. The name of this project is derived off of Nile Dawta’s single dubbed- “Black Woman”,, which seeks to celebrate African Women and foster their self-worth amidst adversities and tribulations faced over time. Nile Dawta served as a Kenyan Ambassador to The Pad Project in 2020, the creators of the Oscar-winning documentary “Period. End of Sentence.” (2018).
The project’s main goal is to restore dignity through sensitization, education, and provision of sanitary/dignity kits – (sanitary pads, panties, tissue papers and soap) to women prisoners in Kenya, through an array of multifaceted free artistic showcases.
Project Black Woman is part of Hii Stage, a grant fund implemented by HEVA and Alliance Francaise with the support of the French Government’s Creation Africa-Kenya project.
Nile Dawta is collaborating with WeN_Music Band, Spontaneous The Poet and various artists to realize the project’s vision by touring three (3) major cities in Kenya. These include Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa.
