Private courier firms eat into PCK’s domestic parcel business

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 6 – Domestic parcels handled by the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) fell by 12 percent to 141,932 between April and June this year (Q1), down from 145,627 in Q1, eaten by gains made by private courier operators.

Latest data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows that private parcel handlers handled 3 million parcels in Q2 from 2.76 million in Q1.

While international outgoing parcels also decreased to 13,020 from 111,850, PCK’s international parcels also fell to 107,035 from 108,416.

Platforms such as Kilimall, Jumia, Instagram, and Facebook Marketplace have intensified competition for the PCK by offering faster and more efficient last-mile delivery services, leading to reduced activity at the State-owned agency.

The corporation has also been accused of offering below par services, discouraging customers who end up with private firms.

However, the data shows that domestic letters handled by PCK grew by 19.5 percent to 174,057 in Q2 from 145,627 in Q1.
