NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 12 — Police have impounded 20 litres of suspected counterfeit alcohol and Kenya Revenue Stamps (KRA) stamps in a rented house in Ngurubani town in Kirinyaga county.
The police raided the rented house after a tip off from a member of the public.
Speaking after the raid on Thursday, Kirinyiga commander Reuben Muli said officers from Wang’uru Police Station recovered 20 liters of ethanol, 52 cartons of Triple Ace Vodka, Smart Vodka in different cartons, and 5,596 empty bottles.
“We managed to recover a pressing machine used to manufacture the beer, a roll of KRA stickers, and assorted cups,” Muli said.
“We raid a house which is was suspected to be manufacturing fake alcohol, and this business is taking place in a residential area. You cannot suspect, you cannot know an ordinary person, a police officer on patrol will not know and that is the reason I said we acted on our informer.”
The commander added the drinks were repackaged in reused bottles of popular brands and resealed for the market.
He added that the suspect was placed under police custody stating the crackdown on fake liquor will spare no one who is found culpable.
“We will not lose any opportunity or momentum in cracking down illicit liquor and arresting anybody. We will sustain the war and so far, we are almost at 98 per cent and we are working towards 100 per cent,” Muli said.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the police service to support government efforts to eradicate illicit brews.
