Liquid wallpaper gains ground as developers seek smarter interior finishes

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 – Developers are turning to interior differentiation,as Kenya’s construction sector grows in a move to create opportunities for innovative wall finishes.

Freedrop Limited is positioning itself at the forefront of this trend with liquid wallpaper, a textured, eco-friendly alternative to conventional paint and imported wall coverings.

CEO Bancy Kalekye says changing consumer expectations are driving demand across residential and commercial spaces.

“Clients today are looking beyond colour, unlike in previous years. They want materials that add texture, improve comfort, and align with sustainability goals,” she explains.

Made from natural fibres, liquid wallpaper provides a textured finish with functional benefits such as sound absorption, making it ideal for offices, hotels, and shared environments.

Its odourless composition also addresses concerns about indoor air quality, appealing to families with young children.

Developers are drawn to the material’s efficiency.

It can be applied directly onto hard plaster, cutting down on surface preparation, labour, and project timelines.

After mixing with water and applying with a trowel or spatula, the finish sets naturally within 12 to 24 hours.

A notable advantage is reusability.

The material can be removed through re-wetting and reapplied elsewhere, supporting sustainability and resource efficiency in construction projects.

For homeowners, the finish offers a non-toxic, low-disruption solution.

For businesses, it contributes to quieter, more comfortable workspaces while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Despite these benefits, adoption remains gradual.

Conventional paint dominates the mass market due to affordability, while imported wallpaper holds sway in the premium segment.

“There is still a need to educate the market,” Ms Kalekye says. “But once clients understand the lifecycle benefits, the value proposition becomes clear.”

Freedrop’s clients include developers, corporate offices, and homeowners seeking distinctive interior finishes.
