NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 24 – An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team is expected in Nairobi tomorrow for discussions on a possible support program.
The delegation, led by IMF mission chief for Kenya Haimanot Teferra, will hold talks with Kenyan authorities until October 9, 2025.
The visit follows a request by the government to begin initial discussions on a new Fund-supported program.
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) announced last month that it was pursuing IMF backing after the collapse of the $3.6 billion Extended Fund Facility and Extended Credit Facility programs.
The two facilities, worth $800 million, stalled after Kenya failed to meet conditions on revenue collection and deficit reduction.
The IMF has pledged to support Kenya in maintaining macroeconomic stability, safeguarding debt sustainability, strengthening governance, and promoting inclusive growth.
The mission comes months after the government was forced to abandon contentious tax hikes in the 2024 Finance Bill following deadly youth-led protests.
