NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 10 – Most residents in the country are concerned with the way their county generates revenue with a majority saying there are too many taxes and levies.

A new survey carried out in 5 counties by Ipsos Kenya finds that 57 percent of county residents are concerned with the many taxes, followed by poor revenue collection and accountability systems at 50 percent.

Ipsos Director Hilda Kiritu says despite the high number of taxes, 59 percent of county residents feel that their economic well-being has gone down.

“You would expect that the high number of taxes would translate into improved economic well-being; but that’s not how things are on the ground,” Kiritu said.

Overall, most respondents feel that devolution has led to equal distribution of resources at 32 percent.

The first edition of the Service delivery index survey was carried out in Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Mombasa and Kisumu and sought to evaluate the ease of doing business in the counties.

The survey was conducted between 24 and 28th June on 1,320 people, living in urban and rural areas in the counties.
