Today, Google announced the expansion of its AI-powered learning tools across Africa, offering eligible higher education students in 27 countries one year of Google AI Plus at no cost. Eligible students can access 12 months of Google AI Plus, which includes Gemini Omni, two times higher usage limits in Gemini and 400 GB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, alongside a growing suite of AI-powered learning tools.
The offer gives university and college students access to Gemini and other AI-powered learning tools designed to support research, coursework, revision and everyday academic tasks. Students in markets including Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, alongside 24 other countries across the region, can now claim the offer, subject to eligibility requirements.
The initiative comes as students across the region navigate different academic calendars, with some preparing for a new academic year while others are already in the middle of their studies. It reflects Google’s continued commitment to helping students access technology that can support learning throughout their academic journey.
This expansion follows last year’s Gemini Student offer and will see students who previously claimed the offer renew their access for another 12 months, subject to re-verification.

AI tools designed to support learning
Google’s AI learning tools are designed to help students work through complex topics, explore ideas and develop a deeper understanding of their subjects, rather than simply provide answers.
The student experience using Google AI Plus includes:
- Student hub: A dedicated space in Gemini where students can access learning tools, organise their studies, create practice quizzes and explore different ways to learn
- Study notebooks: Students can upload course materials such as lecture notes, syllabi and reading materials. Gemini can then help break down topics, identify knowledge gaps and create tailored lessons and quizzes to support learning
- Interactive visualisations: Gemini can generate interactive 3D models, simulations, tables and other visual elements to help students understand complex concepts across subjects
- Gemini live with deep research: Students can have conversational discussions with Gemini about their research and launch comprehensive, multi-step research reports that continue working in the background
- Practice and visual learning tools: Students can use Gemini and other Google AI experiences to explore concepts, practise what they have learnt and work through visual problems and diagrams
