NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 26 – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has moved to dispel reports circulating online that sought to link the Office of the Deputy President to one of the police officers charged over a violent robbery incident in Kitengela.
In a firm clarification issued after the suspects appeared in court, the DCI stated that PC Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a is not part of the Deputy President’s protection team and confirmed he is stationed at Elwak Police Station, where he was off duty at the time of the alleged offence.
The statement came just hours after four officers were arraigned at the Kajiado Law Courts to answer to accusations of robbery with violence.
The officers, PC Lincoln Ashioya (110661), PC Tom Odero Abwoga (108093) of Muungano Police Station, PC Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a (112507) of Elwak Police Station, and PC Perminus Muiruri Kamau (111947) of DCI Kitengela, are alleged to have committed the offence alongside an accomplice identified as Erick, who is still on the run.
Investigators had asked the court to allow them to hold the suspects for 10 more days to complete inquiries, but the application was declined. Instead, the officers were released on Ksh 50,000 cash bail each, with instructions to report daily at 7:00 p.m. to DCI Isinya.
According to the police report filed in court, the complainant, Congolese national Djuma Yasin Mumbele, was travelling from Namanga to Nairobi on March 23, 2026, when he was approached by a man named Erick who claimed he could help him secure a buyer for his diamond necklace in Kitengela.
Upon arrival at the Kitengela main stage, he was led to a vehicle, KBK 771Z, where individuals posing as buyers inspected the jewellery.
The report states that two more men entered the vehicle, attempted to handcuff the complainant, and allegedly robbed him. He was rescued by members of the public, who managed to apprehend one suspect and hand him over to police.
The complainant reported losing a diamond necklace valued at $1,905, $3,000, €300, and Dh500. He was treated at Kitengela Level Four Hospital for injuries to his neck and back and later discharged in stable condition. The vehicle used during the incident has been secured as an exhibit.
Investigations further revealed the officers are also wanted by DCI Embakasi in relation to another robbery case. Identification parades conducted before the arraignment yielded positive results.
In its latest communication, the DCI reiterated that officers implicated in criminal conduct will face the law like any other suspects, underscoring the agency’s stand on professionalism and accountability within the service.
