NAIROBI, Kenya, August 24, 2026 – Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has lamented the ‘funny’ mistakes that cost them victory in Sunday’s FKF Super Cup against Tusker at the Nyayo Stadium.
Akonnor admits that such schoolboy mistakes are becoming a sore thumb that may cripple the team’s silverware ambitions in 2026/27.
“We did funny mistakes and as a result of that we conceded goals. It’s becoming a little bit of a problem and we have to be able to solve it quickly before anything happens. The goals that they scored was as a result of individual mistakes and it’s happening a lot,” the Ghanaian said.
The FKF Premier League champions were humbled 3-1 by the brewers, in an encounter in which they struggled to carve out clear cut chances.
Francis Oduor put the domestic cup champions in the lead in the 33rd minute, Eugene Ikutwa’s long range missile making it 2-0 in the 35th minute.
Ikutwa’s own goal in the 38th minute was a temporary respite for K’Ogalo whose hopes of a comeback were snuffed out by Ian Simiyu’s diving header in the 54th minute.
Coming into the game, the Cecafa Club Championships losing finalists fielded a second-string side in which ex-AFC Leopards custodian Humphrey Katasi was handed a starting berth, as was Ugandan import Dennis Omedi, who struggled to lead the line.
However, Akonnor dispelled suggestions that it was an experimental line-up, noting that he approached the game with a competitive mindset — keen to land his first silverware of the new season.
“We’re not testing. We’ve gone past testing. Today, those who played, who started, are players we can close our eyes and say they should play. We didn’t do well in certain areas of the game, especially when we were defending,” he said.
Both teams now turn their attention to the start of the league as well as continental football.
Gor will be competing in the Caf Champions League whereas Tusker take to the Confederations Cup.
