NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – Businessman John Ngumi is facing possible arrest after a Nairobi court issued a notice requiring him to appear and explain why he should not be committed to civil jail over an unpaid debt.
According to a notice issued by the Milimani Commercial Courts, Ngumi is required to appear before the Chief Magistrate’s Court on April 27, 2026, to show cause why execution proceedings should not be enforced against him.
The court notice indicates that the decree holder, Nibrish Chandulal Shah, is seeking enforcement of a judgment amounting to Sh11.4 million, being the decretal sum plus interest, execution costs and court collection fees.
The court warned that Ngumi risks arrest and committal to civil jail unless he settles the outstanding amount or provides sufficient reason why enforcement should not proceed.
The notice was issued under Order 22 Rule 18 of the Civil Procedure Rules and was filed by Harit Sheth Advocates, acting for the decree holder.
