NAIROBI, Kenya, July 14 – Popular mobile game PUBG MOBILE has launched dedicated servers in Nigeria and South Africa as part of a broader strategy to improve gameplay experience and increase cultural relevance for its growing African user base.
Branded “For Africa, By Africa,” the expansion includes server node selection, allowing players to choose between competing within Africa or globally. The move positions PUBG MOBILE among the first global mobile gaming platforms to invest in local infrastructure on the continent.
“We understand that stable, smooth gameplay is critical for competitive players,” said Brian Gu, Head of PUBG MOBILE Africa. “These upgrades respond directly to feedback from our African community.”
The upgrade also includes new culturally inspired in-game content, including a Maasai-themed outfit and an “Afro Frenzy” dance emote, based on the viral Mapangale dance. Later this year, PUBG MOBILE plans to introduce a digital version of Mancala, the traditional African board game, as part of its push to integrate more regional elements into its platform.
“These features go beyond aesthetics. They represent our respect for African culture and the creativity of our player base,” Gu said.
To further grow its regional presence, the platform is hosting a number of community events, including the Africa Cup Tournament—with national teams competing ahead of the finals in September—and a TikTok x PUBG MOBILE Dance Challenge scheduled for August.
PUBG MOBILE will also hold an Airdrop Festival Carnival, offering giveaways such as Infinix smartphones and Oraimo accessories.
The game’s latest push into Africa reflects a broader trend in the global gaming industry to localise experiences and improve latency in underserved regions. With mobile gaming continuing to rise in popularity across Africa, analysts say investments like these could further accelerate market growth.
