NAIROBI, Kenya, April 20 – Members of Parliament (MPs) are set to spend millions of shillings on choppers, fine dining, and travel, among others, amid cashflow challenges that the government is currently facing.
Through a notice, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) has invited individuals to submit bids for the above services.
This comes at a time when President William Ruto’s government is facing a huge financial pressure amid salaries delay for civil servants.
“The Kenya National Assembly invites applications from interested and eligible bidders for the registration of suppliers, consultants and contractors for use on ‘as and when required basis’ in the Financial Years 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 ending on 30th June 2025,” PSC said in a statement.
“Completed tender documents enclosed in a plain sealed envelope, marked with the tender number and name should be deposited in the Tender Box at 13th Floor, Protection House, Nairobi,” it added.
It also seeks suppliers for auctions, travel and air ticketing, calling cards, as well as furniture and fittings.
“Tenders will be opened immediately thereafter in the presence of the tenderers who choose to attend or their representatives at Protection House, 13th floor at the Junction of Parliament Road and Haile Selassie Avenue, Nairobi,” it added.
On April 10, the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u warned civil servants of a looming delay in the processing of salaries.
He attributed the delay to the financial crunch that the state was facing amid depressed revenue growth and constrained access to the capital market.
Government employees monthly pay accumulates to Sh50 billion and Sh8 billion for pension payments.
As of March 2023, the national treasury had accumulated debt repayments of Sh150 billion.
