NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 25 – President William Ruto has opened a new potato cold storage facility in Meru County to cut waste, grade products, and increase product competitiveness in Kenya and internationally.
The Ngusishi Cold storage facility has a store capacity of 2,000 metric tonnes of potatoes per year and will serve 14,000 farmers.
Ruto said that the project highlights the government’s commitment to creating sustainable solutions for MSMEs in the agricultural sector, especially towards achieving food security.
The new facility is part of a Sh300 million investment covering Kisii and Nyandarua counties that aims to minimize post-harvest losses, ensure the economic viability of potato farming, and create competitive and sustainable jobs along the value chain.
The three projects collectively contribute to increasing the income of smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs engaged in potato and vegetable production.
The Head of State was accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Simon Chelugui, among others.
