Lands Ministry, NLC seek MPs support to reverse slashed budgetary allocations

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 8 – The Ministry of Lands and the National Land Commission (NLC) are seeking support from the Committee of Lands to compel the National Treasury to rescind cuts proposed in the Supplementary Estimates.

Land and Physical Planning Principal Secretary Nixon Korir and National Land Commissioner Kazungu Kambi regretted that the delay in the release of the funds has led to delays in the completion of the construction of several land offices.

“Land offices in Kitui, Mbeere, Bomet, Ol Kalau, and Nandi are over 90% complete. Despite the State Department’s budget not being reduced in this year’s Supplementary Estimates, the National Treasury has not released funds to complete and hand over these lands offices,” added PS Korir

The two spoke during a session with the National Assembly Committee of Lands to review the Supplementary Estimates. 

The cabinet sanctioned a 10.0 percent decrease in each State department’s recurrent spending to settle carryovers and pending bills for the previous fiscal years. 

Committee Members expressed concern with the delayed release of funds from the National Treasury lawmakers’  calling on the National Treasury to expedite the release of budgetary allocations.

Kambi at the same time, urged the National Assembly to reinstate Sh112.7 Million which had been slashed from its land management and administration vote head.

He said the reduction is likely to adversely affect its daily operations.

“We urge the Committee on Lands to intervene and support the reinstatement of the Sh112.7 million. Without these funds, NLC will be unable to function,” said the NLC Commissioner.
