NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17 – The Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Alice Wahome has presided over the unveiling of new facilities at the Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), a regional institution serving 20 Eastern African countries with training and research in land-related knowledge.
This marks a significant step in RCMRD’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in its member states.
During the ceremony held in Kasarani, Nairobi, CS Wahome, representing President William Ruto, was accompanied by Generali Nixon Korir, the Principal Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning, and other senior department officials.
The CS officially commissioned the Research Center Training Institute Hostel and an Administration Complex, marking a significant step in RCMRD’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in its member states. Established in 1975 with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union, RCMRD provides training and conducts research on geo-information and related technologies.
In her address, CS Wahome emphasized the pivotal role played by RCMRD in enhancing skills and expertise within the region. She also announced the Ministry of Lands’ commitment to support the center in addressing its challenges.
Responding to a request from RCMRD Director Mr. Emanuel Nkurunziza, CS Wahome expressed her support for students pursuing courses at the center to receive National Government funding, similar to students in other higher education institutions.
“We will work closely with the Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to ensure that RCMRD receives funding to support its students,” affirmed CS Wahome.
Mr. Nkurunziza highlighted how the institution had redirected its budget to prevent more than 40 students from dropping out due to financial constraints.
Speaking at the event, PS Generali Nixon Korir underscored RCMRD’s significance in land digitization and its vital role in economic development across the 20 member states. He encouraged member states to continue collaborating and leveraging the knowledge, skills, expertise, and innovations provided by the center.
The Chairperson of the RCMRD Governing Council, Dorcas Wagima Okalany, Kasarani area MP Hon. Ronald Karauri, and representatives from member countries also graced the occasion.
