Kenyan Influencer In China Graduates With a PhD, Balances Brand Deals And A Doctorate

Kenyans following Mirriam Ogunja online know her as the woman who charmed all of
Sichuan Province on TV. Now, add another title to her name: Doctor.

Ogunja’s online following didn’t start with a plan to build one. Barely six months after
moving to Chengdu in 2023, producers from Sichuan Living, a show following expats in
the province, invited her for what was meant to be a casual chat about settling into life in
China. She wasn’t new to a camera, she’d been featured on TV back home in Kenya
before and it showed. Her warmth on camera, sharp English and easy humour turned
the episode into the show’s most-watched feature ever.

“I wasn’t trying to go viral,” she says, laughing. “I was simply telling my story.”

The clip did the rest. Chinese brands came calling for partnerships. Companies invited
her to cultural events. Executives wanted her take on Africa, and she found herself
becoming, almost by accident, the face many Chinese audiences associated with
Kenya.

Off camera, her life in Chengdu settled into a rhythm that will feel familiar to any young
person building a life abroad on a budget. Her scholarship came with a 3,500 RMB
monthly stipend and a 1,000 RMB housing allowance, but decent apartments in
Chengdu, like the one she eventually settled on, cost more than that allowance covered,
so the rest came out of her own pocket. She closed the gap the way most Kenyan
students there do: cheap, cheerful shopping hauls off Pinduoduo, groceries that stretch
further than they would back home, and a metro system so efficient she rarely thinks
twice about getting around the city. Phone bills got deducted like clockwork on the first
of every month. There’s a running joke among Kenyan students in China that by the
time you leave, all you have to show for it is an iPhone and a wardrobe from Pinduoduo
and Ogunja laughs that she isn’t entirely exempt from it. Still, she made room to travel
when she could, collecting friends from nationalities she’d never expected to cross
paths with. Slowly, Chengdu stopped feeling like a temporary stop and started feeling
like a second home.

It’s the kind of life that photographs well. What it didn’t show was the other half of her
schedule.

While brands were sliding into her inbox, Ogunja was also deep in a Doctor of Business
Administration programme at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of
China, on a fully funded Chinese Government Scholarship. The brand deals, she says,
ended up mattering more than the exposure.

“Those partnerships gave me the financial independence to focus on my research without the constraints that limit a lot of early-career scholars,” she explains.

It’s an unusual pairing sponsored posts by day, dissertation chapters by night  but Ogunja treated them as two sides of the same project: building a life in China that was fully hers, on her own terms.

This year, the academic side of that life caught up with the public one. Ogunja graduated with her PhD, closing out a doctorate she started the same year she began quietly becoming one of the most recognisable Kenyan faces in Sichuan.

She’s since picked up more formal recognition too, including a nomination for African Woman of the Year at this year’s Asia Pacific Awards in Beijing  proof, she says, that the two halves of her life in China were never really in competition.

The content was never the point on its own, she’s careful to add. “My goal has always been to make research on the China-Africa relationship useful to scholars and communities alike,” she says.

“Sometimes you’re the first Kenyan someone has ever interacted with,” she reflects. “That comes with responsibility.” For Dr. Mirriam Ogunja, that responsibility now comes with a title to match.
