NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – Kenya’s trade with the United Kingdom has reached a record Sh340 billion in 2024, representing an 11.9 percent increase compared to the previous year, driven by higher exports and imports between the two countries.
Data from the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry and the British High Commission in Nairobi shows that UK exports to Kenya rose by 8 percent, while Kenyan exports to the UK grew by 14 percent.
Kenya exported goods worth Sh63 billion and services worth Sh71.5 billion to the UK during the review period. Exports of animal and vegetable products recorded the fastest growth, rising 15.6 percent to Sh28.7 billion, followed by beverages, including coffee and tea, which increased 12.8 percent to Sh24.3 billion.
On the other hand, the UK exported goods and services valued at Sh134.6 billion, up from Sh124 billion last year. Mechanical power generators saw the strongest growth at 18.3 percent, followed by refined oil (12 percent) and cars (10 percent).
“The UK and Kenya are turbocharging trade. Our renewed Strategic Partnership is already delivering progress in a matter of months,” said Dr. Ed Barnett, Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission in Nairobi. “We’re working together to break down trade barriers. We go far when we go together.”
Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam said the growth underscores a strengthening economic partnership between Kenya and the UK.
“Sustained collaboration will enhance trade opportunities, diversify exports, and strengthen economic resilience on both sides,” she said.
Ombam added that Kenya aims to expand its export base through value addition, branding, and export promotion of locally made goods to boost access to international markets.
