NAIROBI, Kenya, May 21 – Kenya Power has received the go-ahead to finalize a Sh1.2 billion transformer procurement, following a ruling by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB) that dismissed objections from two local manufacturers.
The tender, reserved for local firms, involves the supply of 3,319 distribution transformers.
Bidders Empower Transformers Ltd and Nairobi Transformers Manufacturers (E.A.) Co. Ltd had challenged the 14-day delivery condition, arguing it unfairly favored companies with pre-existing stock and alleging selective communication.
However, the Board sided with Kenya Power, citing urgency, public interest, and sufficient justification.
One application was struck out on a procedural error; the other lacked adequate evidence of bias.
The decision clears the way for Kenya Power to address delays in electricity connections and transformer replacements, key concerns for consumers amid recent service disruptions.
