Ichung’wah faces graft queries before Al Jazeera interview

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 5 – National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah is under growing pressure ahead of an upcoming Al Jazeera interview, with civil society groups demanding tough questions on corruption, nepotism, and human rights violations.

A letter from concerned citizens and advocacy organizations urges Al Jazeera’s editorial team to confront Ichung’wah about controversial government appointments, extrajudicial killings, and alleged misuse of public funds.

“These allegations include abductions, corruption, nepotism, opulence in government spending, and aiding imperialism,” the letter reads. “Given Al Jazeera’s reputation for holding leaders accountable, we believe Kenyans deserve answers.”

Controversial Bills and Public Protests

Ichung’wah has faced backlash over a series of controversial bills, with critics accusing him of pushing unpopular laws by breaking them into smaller parts to avoid public scrutiny. Among the bills in question are amendments affecting the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Al Jazeera is urged to ask why he adopted this legislative strategy and if it signals deliberate opacity in governance.

Abductions and Human Rights Concerns

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has demanded Ichung’wah’s resignation, accusing him of endorsing abductions and extrajudicial killings. The controversy follows January remarks by Ichung’wah and other politicians at a requiem mass, where he dismissed claims of forced disappearances, suggesting some were faked for financial gain.

The letter calls on Al Jazeera to question him on his role in Kenya’s human rights landscape.

Healthcare Crisis and Mismanagement

Despite a Sh104 billion investment, Kenya’s healthcare system continues to struggle, with critics citing widespread mismanagement. The letter urges Al Jazeera to probe Ichung’wah on why the sector remains in crisis despite significant budget allocations.

State Capture and the Adani Deal

The letter also raises concerns about state capture, particularly regarding the Adani deal, which was canceled over corruption allegations.

Petitioners want Al Jazeera to ask Ichung’wah whether the contract cancellation was enough to resolve corruption concerns or if deeper accountability measures are needed.
