NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 17 – The family of a 20-year-old woman who was found murdered in Roysambu has revealed details of the last moment at the hands of her abductors.
In a statement signed by the family spokesperson, the family of Rita Waeni Muendo said the deceased left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet with a friend on Saturday.
However, at around 5 am on Sunday, the father received a message, from Waeni’s phone number, demanding a ransom of Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release.
“With this message, the family reported the matter to the police and DCI, and investigations began,” she said.
The family proceeded and reported the matter to the police as two more messages were sent to Waeni’s family demanding the ransom.
According to the family’s spokesperson, the family did not however, get further details about the ransom or an opportunity to explore this route.
Some demands were later made when the victim had already been murdered.
“After a painful and futile search, working with the DCI, we positively identified our child, as the girl tragically murdered at the wake of Sunday morning at/or around Thika Road Mall, January 14,” she added.
She explained that the family believes that their deceased daughter was lured by her killer, who also tried to extort money from her family, even after killing her.
The family described their late daughter who was due to join her fourth and final year of University at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as a “radiant soul in our lives, who was tragically taken from us far too soon.”
The family’s spokesperson stated that deceased’s loved ones have been shattered over the loss of and broken especially at the manner she was killed.
“Her parents, siblings, and our entire family are yet to come to terms with this tragic event. Our daughter, Waeni, was an intelligent, smart girl beyond her age at the very start of her youth,” she said.
The family further described their deceased daughter as “a spirited and caring individual, known for her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room she entered.”
The grief-stricken family requested privacy as they come to terms with the devastating event.
The 20-year-old’s body was found on Sunday stuffed in a paper bag off Thika Road, Nairobi.
