NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 24 – Former Ugenya lawmaker Christopher Karan has been arrested by detectives attached to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Karan was Wednesday arrested alongside his lawyer for forging a letter he used in a petition against his opponent, David Ochieng’ who defeated him during a by-election on April 6 after the court nullified Karan’s election in the 2017 general election.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had proved Karan’s prosecution on April 5 through a notice published on the Kenya Gazette.
Ochieng who contested the April by-election as an independent edged out Karan who stood on an ODM ticket after garnering 18,730 votes.
Karani only secured 14, 567 votes.
He allegedly presented a forged letter indicating that he had been hospitalized in a bid to seek the court’s approval to file responses to the petition challenging his election past a deadline stipulated by the court.

EACC wrote to Haji on October 16, 2018, asking for approval to charge Karan with fraud.
“The MP did not file his response immediately meaning he was statutorily barred from filing a response to the petition. He however filed a notice of motion dated September 25, 2017 seeking to have his response to the petition,” an EACC inquiry outlined at the time.
